Here are some quick thoughts on the Buccaneers’ 48-25 victory over the Falcons. Tampa Bay is now 2-0 on the season.
How about that offense? The Bucs have now won nine straight games scoring 30 or more points. Tom Brady threw five more touchdown passes, giving him 9 in the first 2 games. In my 35 years of being a fan, I have not seen any Bucs’ offensive firepower like this, for such a long period of time. And yet, there are still flaws (penalties, turnovers, etc.) But 2-0 is 2-0.
The defense giveth, then taketh away. For the first 35 minutes or so, Tampa Bay’s secondary looked like it did in the opener against Dallas, and the way it did for much of 2020. But after Atlanta pulled to within 3 points midway through the third quarter, defensive coordinator Todd Bowles flipped a switch, and suddenly the defense looked the unit that beat Kansas City in the Super Bowl. The surge was punctuated by a pair of Pick Sixes by Mike Edwards in the fourth quarter.
So, what’s next? A trip to Los Angeles to play the 2-0 Rams. I will be there for that one. This is a huge, early-season game. An NFC Championship preview? That may not be too far-fetched.
